Westgate Primary

Art

At Westgate Primary School all children, including SEN and disadvantaged pupils, learn the following concepts through studying different aspects of art throughout the school:

Art at Westgate aims to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. At Westgate, we allow children the opportunity to develop their Art skills through a spiral curriculum in key areas such as drawing, painting and mixed media, sculpture and 3D and craft and design. This allows for the various skills to be embedded resulting in high quality outcomes because children are able to draw upon their prior learning and knowledge, reinforce this and build upon it further. Final pieces demonstrate knowledge of skills taught, provide opportunities for evaluation whilst also reflect the children’s individual pride and creativity.

Through each unit the children focus on the work of a modern day or historical artist from a range of backgrounds and cultures who use different art forms. This allows children to learn key facts about the artist and their work and make comparisons. We deliver lessons that inspire children to see art as a ‘creative process’ which needs to be planned, developed, refined/adapted and reflected upon. When children leave Westgate, they will have an excellent knowledge and understanding of the lives and work of an inclusive and diverse range of artists, a progressive and secure knowledge of art skills and tools in the key identified areas, experience of making and evaluating creative decisions and a sense of pride and respect for their own creativity and that of others.
